A significant firefighting operation is currently underway in Mayfield, prompting the closure of Maitland Road to traffic in both directions. The incident began on Monday afternoon, with emergency services receiving over 30 urgent triple zero calls reporting substantial smoke and flames emanating from a building near Denison Street.
Emergency Response
Fire and Rescue NSW crews were alerted to the blaze at approximately 3:30pm, with nine fire trucks arriving at the scene and at least two more en route. Specialist resources have also been deployed to assist in the operation. Police have closed Maitland Road between Hanbury Street and Edmund Street to facilitate the emergency response.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson confirmed that by around 4pm, the flames had been contained to the building, though the situation remains dynamic. Firefighters were initially battling the blaze from outside while awaiting the disconnection of power before attempting to enter the structure. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The fire has caused significant traffic disruption during peak hour, with vehicles banked up and gridlocked in the area.
