A tragic three-vehicle collision in far-north Queensland has resulted in the deaths of a young woman and an infant child, with another woman fighting for her life in hospital.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on the Captain Cook Highway in Oak Beach, located south of Port Douglas, after reports of a serious crash involving multiple vehicles around 4pm on Friday.
According to police, a Mitsubishi Triton utility vehicle collided with an MG3 sedan. The driver of the MG, a 25-year-old woman, and an infant passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A 22-year-old female passenger in the same vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Cairns Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Investigation underway
The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 62-year-old man, was taken to Cairns Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Initial investigations suggest that the Mitsubishi first struck a Mazda before crashing into the MG3. The driver and passenger of the Mazda were uninjured in the incident.
Police are appealing for anyone with information, particularly dashcam footage, to come forward as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads as the investigation progresses.
