Cairns Council Approves $90m Waste Deal with Cleanaway
Cairns Council signs $90m garbage contract

Cairns Regional Council has officially locked in a major new agreement for the city's household waste and recycling services, signing a decade-long contract worth nearly $90 million.

A New Decade for Waste Management

The council has selected Cleanaway as its new service provider, awarding the company a contract valued at approximately $89.7 million. This deal covers essential kerbside collection for general waste, recycling, and green organics across the Cairns local government area. The new arrangement is set to commence on July 1, 2025, and will run for an initial term of ten years, with options for extension.

Councillor Brett Moller, who holds the Water and Waste portfolio, highlighted that the decision followed a rigorous and competitive tender process. He stated the new contract would deliver enhanced services for residents while also creating a significant number of local employment opportunities. The council anticipates the deal will support around 50 full-time jobs in the region.

Continuity and Community Benefits

While the provider is changing, residents will experience a smooth transition. The familiar weekly collection schedules for red-lid general waste bins and yellow-lid recycling bins will remain unchanged. The fortnightly pickup for green waste bins will also continue as normal.

A key community benefit embedded in the contract is Cleanaway's commitment to local procurement and investment. The company has pledged to establish a new depot and maintenance facility within the Cairns region. Furthermore, they plan to initiate a school education program focused on recycling and waste reduction, aiming to foster environmental stewardship from a young age.

Councillor Moller emphasised the council's duty to secure the best long-term value for ratepayers. "We have a responsibility to ensure we are getting the best service for the best price for our community," he said. The tender evaluation carefully balanced cost with the quality of service and the broader social and economic benefits for the Cairns community.

Looking Towards a Sustainable Future

The council's move signifies a long-term commitment to securing reliable and efficient waste services for the growing city. The contract with Cleanaway, a major national player in waste management, is expected to bring operational expertise and potential innovations in recycling processing to the region.

This decision marks the end of the current service contract. The council has expressed confidence that the new partnership will not only maintain but potentially improve service standards, contributing to Cairns's sustainability goals and keeping the city clean for residents and visitors alike.
