A 46-year-old man has been charged following a serious assault on an elderly woman in Townsville that left her with critical injuries. Police allege the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the suburb of Aitkenvale, where the woman, aged 82, was attacked.
Details of the assault
Emergency services were called to a residential address on Ross River Road just before 2pm after reports of an altercation. Upon arrival, they found the elderly woman with severe injuries to her head and face. She was immediately transported to Townsville University Hospital, where she remains in a critical but stable condition.
The accused man, who is known to the victim, was arrested at the scene without incident. He has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and is set to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Friday.
Police investigation ongoing
Detective Inspector John Smith of the Townsville Criminal Investigation Branch stated that the attack appears to have been unprovoked. 'This was a violent and senseless act against a vulnerable member of our community,' he said. 'We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward.'
The man remains in police custody and is expected to apply for bail during his court appearance. Police have not ruled out additional charges as the investigation progresses.
Community reaction
Local residents have expressed shock and concern over the attack. 'It's terrifying to think something like this could happen in our neighbourhood,' said a nearby resident who wished not to be named. 'We hope the woman recovers quickly and that justice is served.'
Neighbourhood watch groups have increased patrols in the area following the incident. Police have assured the community that there is no ongoing threat and that the accused is known to the victim.
The case has also sparked discussions about safety for the elderly in Townsville. Support services for victims of violent crime have been offered to the woman's family.
