Man Faces Charges After High-Speed Police Pursuit with Children in Vehicle in Far West NSW
A 32-year-old man has been formally charged by authorities after allegedly engaging in a high-speed police chase with two young children present in the car in the Far West region of New South Wales. The incident unfolded late on Saturday night, sparking significant concern from law enforcement officials due to the presence of minors during the dangerous pursuit.
Alleged Failure to Comply with Police Instructions
According to police reports, the man allegedly ignored direct orders to stop for a routine roadside breath test on Menindee Road in Broken Hill at approximately 10:00 PM on Saturday. This refusal to comply with standard traffic safety procedures prompted officers to initiate an immediate response, setting the stage for a dramatic and hazardous chase across the region.
Dangerous High-Speed Pursuit on Barrier Highway
The pursuit quickly escalated as the vehicle entered the Barrier Highway, where it is alleged to have reached speeds of up to 180 kilometres per hour in a zone with a posted limit of 110 kilometres per hour. This reckless driving behaviour posed a severe risk to all road users and highlighted the extreme dangers associated with such high-speed incidents in rural areas.
Police Intervention and Arrest
After travelling an estimated distance of about 160 kilometres, Wilcannia Police successfully deployed road spikes to bring the sedan to a controlled stop. The man then allegedly fled the scene on foot, running into nearby bushland, but was apprehended and arrested by officers a short time later without further incident.
Discovery of Passengers and Charges Laid
Upon securing the vehicle, police discovered a 34-year-old woman, a 14-year-old girl, and a seven-month-old girl inside. Fortunately, none of the passengers sustained any injuries during the ordeal. The man was transported to Broken Hill Police Station, where he was charged with multiple offences, including:
- Driving while disqualified
- Police pursuit — fail to stop — drive dangerously
- Contravening an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO)
He was refused bail and was scheduled to appear before Bail Division Court 4 on Sunday, pending further legal proceedings.
