Man Arrested After Allegedly Ramming Police Car in Alice Springs Incident
A 38-year-old man has been taken into custody following a dramatic incident in Alice Springs, where he is accused of deliberately ramming a police vehicle at high speed. The alleged attack occurred on Todd Street late Wednesday night, sparking a swift response from Northern Territory authorities.
Details of the Alleged Attack
According to police reports, the suspect drove a blue Mazda BT-50 dual cab towards an officer who was standing on the road and footpath, as well as a parked police car, around 10:30 PM. Footage from the scene captures the vehicle accelerating aggressively towards the patrol car, despite an officer firing three shots in an attempt to halt the advance.
The Mazda then crashed into the rear of the police vehicle with significant force, pushing it several metres forward. Police confirmed that the shots struck the oncoming vehicle, but fortunately, no one was injured by the gunfire. An officer seated in the driver's seat of the patrol car sustained minor injuries and was taken to Alice Springs Hospital for treatment, but has since been discharged.

The alleged offender was also transported to hospital for a precautionary assessment following the incident. Authorities stated that officers were initially responding to reports of disturbances involving multiple people in the area at the time of the attack.
NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole condemned the actions, describing the incident as "abhorrent". He emphasized, "The deliberate targeting of our hard-working officers is absolutely abhorrent, and we will not stand for it. Every time our officers attend an incident, they are putting their lives at risk to keep the community safe. This is a clear example of the split-second decisions our officers can be forced to make whilst protecting the community."
A crime scene has been established on Todd Street, and investigations are ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage related to the incident to come forward and assist with the inquiry.
