A sweeping police operation in Far North Queensland has led to charges against 435 individuals as part of a major crackdown on serious and organised crime. Dubbed Operation Yankee Forge, the initiative targeted criminal networks involved in drug trafficking, property crime, and violence across the region.
Operation Details
Police conducted hundreds of searches and made numerous arrests over several months, seizing illicit drugs, weapons, and stolen property. The operation involved officers from multiple units, including the Drug and Serious Crime Group, Tactical Crime Squad, and local police.
Charges and Arrests
Among those charged, 78 were remanded in custody, while others were granted bail. Charges ranged from drug possession and supply to burglary, robbery, and assault. Police also laid charges related to weapons offences and stolen vehicles.
Detective Acting Superintendent Chris Hodgman said the operation sent a strong message to criminals. “We are committed to disrupting and dismantling criminal networks that cause harm in our communities,” he stated.
Impact on Community
Local residents have expressed relief at the police action, with many reporting a decrease in anti-social behaviour and property crime in their neighbourhoods. Community leaders have praised the operation but emphasised the need for continued vigilance.
Police have urged anyone with information about criminal activity to come forward. The operation is ongoing, with further arrests expected as investigations continue.
