Police Operation Leads to Charges for Retail Theft at Charlestown Square

In a concerted effort to combat retail crime, police conducted a targeted operation at Charlestown Square Shopping Centre on Thursday, April 9, 2026. The initiative aimed to deter theft, identify repeat offenders, and improve overall safety for shoppers, staff, and local businesses.

Results of the Police Blitz

Following the operation, law enforcement officials charged five people with criminal offences and issued an additional five criminal infringement notices. During the blitz, police detected 14 separate shoplifting incidents, conducted searches on 17 individuals, issued three move-on directions, and inspected 11 businesses to ensure compliance with security protocols.

Officers received support from retailers and centre management throughout the operation, highlighting a collaborative approach to addressing crime in the community. This retail theft operation is part of ongoing police efforts to tackle antisocial behaviour and criminal activities at the Lake Macquarie shopping centre.

Previous Crime Prevention Measures

This latest operation follows similar initiatives in the area. In September of the previous year, police conducted a two-day operation at Glendale and Charlestown, using hand-held metal detectors to search 130 people. That knife-scanning effort was prompted by two stabbings that occurred within hours at Charlestown on August 20.

Additionally, earlier this year, police executed a knife-scanning blitz at Marketown in Newcastle West, demonstrating a broader strategy to enhance public safety across the region.

Community Involvement and Reporting

Police are urging anyone with information about retail theft or other criminal activities to come forward. Individuals can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1800 333 000 to provide tips that may assist in ongoing investigations.

This operation underscores the commitment of local authorities to maintaining a secure environment for residents and visitors alike, with continued focus on proactive measures to prevent crime in shopping centres.
