The Margaret River wine region is celebrating a monumental achievement, with several of its acclaimed producers securing a coveted spot in the International Wine and Spirit Competition's inaugural Top 50 global list.
A Prestigious Global Honour
Unveiled at the IWSC Awards Celebration in London on November 12, 2025, the prestigious list recognises producers from 17 countries, including traditional wine powerhouses like France, Italy, and Spain. The selected wineries are acknowledged for setting a formidable benchmark for global excellence. Among the honoured are House of Cards, Fraser Gallop Estate, Fermoy Estate, Driftwood Estate, Windance Estate, Juniper Estate, and Stones + Thunder.
Local Producer's Stunning Success
For Stones + Thunder operator Darran Stone, the news was both a shock and an immense honour. This international recognition builds upon a wave of recent success for the Wilyabrup-based producer. Just last year, the winery claimed the trophy for Best Margaret River Chardonnay at the James Halliday Australian Chardonnay and Cabernet Challenge, as well as a gong for Best Cabernet Blend at the Margaret River Wine Show.
Mr Stone reflected that those victories were a crucial milestone, firmly establishing his winery "among the region’s most promising new producers".
Translating Local Passion to World Stage
"Our goal is to make wines that feel alive: wild, focused, and unmistakably from our Wagtail Vineyard in Wilyabrup," Mr Stone said.
"Recognition from the IWSC is really special because it builds on the early success we’ve had at home. Few names carry the same weight as the IWSC, and to be recognised by their judges is a strong affirmation that the intent behind our wines is translating clearly. It shows that what’s resonated here in Margaret River also holds its own on the world stage."
He attributes this clarity of purpose to his small-scale approach, which allows for an unwavering focus on the purity and quality of the finished product. This significant accomplishment not only spotlights individual wineries but also cements the Margaret River region's reputation as a world-class producer of premium wines.
