AmaWaterways' Danube Cruise Reveals Gems of Southeast Europe
Danube Cruise Reveals Southeast Europe's Gems

Unveiling the Treasures of the Lower Danube

The Danube River, a master storyteller of Europe, slowly reveals its hidden gems and weaves a rich tapestry of traditions and history for travelers. From stunning landscapes and medieval castles to quaint villages and grand capitals like Bucharest, Belgrade, Budapest, and Vienna, every bend offers a new adventure. My wife and I recently embarked on AmaWaterways' Gems of Southeast Europe: Festive Delights cruise aboard the AmaMagna, Europe's largest river ship, to explore this captivating region.

Bohemian Bucharest: A City of Contrasts

Our journey began in Romania with a late afternoon arrival in Bucharest, where we checked into the Marmorosch, a boutique hotel in a beautifully restored former bank building. Located in the old town's elegant district, it features narrow, lively streets lined with restaurants and shops. After a long flight, I ventured out into the crisp November air, admiring the floodlit grand buildings and warm glow from local establishments. Despite the weariness, the atmosphere was inviting, leading to a well-deserved rest.

The following morning, we discovered Bucharest's extreme contrasts. The legacy of former communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu, overthrown in 1989, is still evident in grand structures like the Palace of the Parliament and vast boulevards built to showcase socialist power. However, this came at the cost of destroying significant cultural heritage. Today, Bucharest is transforming into a modern, sustainable city with walkable neighborhoods, driven by Romania's strong economic growth since joining the EU in 2007.

The Magnificent AmaMagna: Luxury Afloat

After exploring Bucharest, we traveled south to Giurgiu port to board the AmaMagna. This magnificent vessel is nearly twice the width of traditional European river cruise ships, offering ample space. It boasts 98 spacious staterooms ranging from 33 to 66 square meters, four dining venues, a fitness centre, a wellness studio with massage rooms, a hairdresser, and a gift shop. Public spaces include a main lounge, two cosy libraries with faux fireplaces, and a small cinema.

The top sun deck features a heated pool and spa, a pickleball court, a walking track, and upscale outdoor furniture. Our stateroom, No. 212 on level two, was exceptionally spacious at 33 square meters, complete with an entrance hall, separate toilet, spacious bathroom with double vanity and shower, French doors, a comfortable lounge, writing desk, and balcony.

Adventures on the Lower Danube: Culinary and Cultural Delights

We quickly embraced the river cruising lifestyle, enjoying exceptional food, service, and onboard entertainment. Meals were served in the main dining room and alfresco at the bow, with options to book The Chef's Table for degustation menus or Jimmy's Wine Bar for family-style meals. Evenings featured pre and post-dinner cocktails and entertainment in the main lounge, including local cultural performances.

AmaWaterways offers included tours at each destination, hosted by expert local guides. These encompass culinary experiences, wine tasting, and visits to museums and galleries. I particularly enjoyed the bike tours, which provided a unique perspective on cities and villages. The cruise lived up to its name, revealing fascinating stories and experiences.

Highlights of the Journey: Scenic and Historic Wonders

Among the many highlights, sailing through the Iron Gate gorge stood out as the best cruising experience. This natural border between Romania and Serbia features towering limestone cliffs and impressive sights like the giant face of Dacian King Decebalus carved into the cliff and the 14th-century Golubac Fortress, which never fell despite numerous attacks.

The best tour experience was in Vidin, Bulgaria, where a bike tour took us through the charming city centre to the Baba Vida fortress on the Danube's bank. Dating back to the first century AD, this fortress played a strategic role in regional history. Budapest earned the best city award for its stunning architecture and lively street scenes, including the vibrant Vorosmarty Square Christmas Market with Hungarian festive treats and crafts.
