An Australian tourist has tragically died after reportedly slipping and falling approximately 300 metres into a ravine in Peru. The incident occurred while the man was hiking the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Victim identified
Mathew Cameron Patron, 53, was walking the historic trail when he fell around 2pm on Wednesday, according to local media reports citing police. Authorities have identified the victim and are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
Details of the fall
“We have information indicating that he apparently tripped while crossing a wooden bridge, and he likely tried to hold onto the wooden railing, but it gave way and he slipped into the abyss along with it. Unfortunately, he fell down the ravine,” said Cusco Police Region Chief General Virgilio Velasquez.
His body was located on Thursday afternoon, about 300 metres from the “50 Gradas” sector along the Wiñaywayna–Intipunku route, where he is believed to have fallen. A specialist high-angle rescue team also recovered his backpack, shoes, and other belongings during the search.
Travel background
Patron had arrived in Cusco with his wife 12 days before the incident. At the time of the fall, he was travelling with a group of visitors and a guide. The couple had set out on the four-day Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu from the Ollantaytambo district.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the tragic event. More details are expected to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
