Kingston Motorists Have Narrow Escape as Large Tree Crashes Onto Road
Motorists navigating rush-hour traffic on Wentworth Avenue in Kingston experienced a dramatic and frightening incident on Monday morning when a large tree came crashing down onto the roadway. The event occurred near the Old Bus Depot Markets, as traffic was flowing towards Kingston Railway Station, creating a sudden and hazardous obstruction.
Emergency Response and Scene Details
Emergency Services and City Services personnel were promptly dispatched to the location after receiving a call at 9.22am reporting that a tree had uprooted and fallen across the road. Upon arrival, responders discovered a black car and a white utility vehicle trapped under the heavy branches. Remarkably, both vehicles were unoccupied at the time of the incident, which likely prevented serious injuries or fatalities.
Staff on the scene assessed that the vehicles were parked along the road when the tree collapsed. The impact caused significant damage, particularly to the front section of the black car, including its windshield. The swift coordination between emergency teams and arborists was crucial in managing the aftermath.
Traffic Disruption and Cleanup Efforts
The fallen tree brought traffic on that section of Wentworth Avenue to a complete standstill. Authorities quickly implemented diversions, redirecting vehicles towards Telopea Park to maintain some flow during the disruption. Traffic remained affected until approximately 1.15 pm, as City Services workers and arborists worked diligently to cut and remove the large branches that had fallen across both the road and the adjacent footpath.
Once the branches were cleared, both damaged vehicles were loaded onto a tow truck and removed from the site. This allowed for the gradual restoration of normal traffic flow. However, the trunk of the fallen tree remained barricaded on the stretch as a precautionary measure while further assessments were conducted.
No Injuries Reported
ACT Policing confirmed that no injuries resulted from the incident, highlighting the fortunate outcome despite the potential for tragedy. The absence of occupants in the vehicles at the critical moment was a key factor in avoiding harm.
This event serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of urban environments and the importance of prompt emergency responses. Residents and commuters in the area are advised to remain cautious, especially during adverse weather conditions that might affect tree stability.
