Marathon Runner Raises Funds for Melanoma Awareness After Mother's Battle
After witnessing his mother navigate the grueling "wringer" of cancer treatment, Thomas Fisher is determined to raise awareness and funds for melanoma patients through his first marathon. He hopes to make the journey easier for others compared to his mother's challenging 10-year battle.
"She's been through the wringer with it," Mr Fisher said. "In the past six months, we got close—we thought we were going to lose her at certain stages because she would get really bad, with just one thing after the other."
Inspired by Personal Experience
Originally from the Blue Mountains, Mr Fisher moved to Canberra for a change and is now preparing for the Canberra Marathon in April. He expressed gratitude that his mother was able to access excellent healthcare in Sydney, but the thought of not having her here remains a sad and scary prospect.
He described his mother as an optimistic person who, despite the ups and downs of the past decade, always tries to stay engaged with her family's lives. This resilience has fueled his mission to support others facing similar struggles.
Return to Running for Mental Health
Mr Fisher was an avid runner in his youth, but a knee injury halted his practice. Noticing Canberra's active community, where "everybody is running or exercising," he decided to get back into running. He found it beneficial for his mental health, saying, "It's nice to get out and run, you get a few kilometres down and you feel pretty good afterwards."
His parents plan to travel to Canberra to support him during the marathon, which he believes will provide strong motivation on the day. Mr Fisher will participate in The Canberra Times Canberra Marathon on April 12, using the event as a platform to raise funds and awareness for melanoma.
Through his efforts, he aims to highlight the importance of early detection and support for cancer patients, hoping to create a more manageable path for those affected by this disease.
