Emergency Services Respond to Child Found Injured on Horsley Road

A young boy has been hospitalised after being found alone and injured on a suburban road in the Illawarra region of New South Wales.

Discovery of Injured Child

Bystanders discovered the 12-year-old boy lying underneath a bicycle on Morson Avenue in Horsley at approximately 12:45pm on Friday, January 23. The incident occurred without witnesses, with emergency services describing it as an unwitnessed bicycle accident.

The child was conscious when found, but had sustained significant injuries requiring immediate medical attention.

Emergency Response and Treatment

A specialised NSW Ambulance road retrieval team was deployed to the scene, consisting of a doctor and intensive care paramedic trained to handle serious trauma cases. The medical team provided initial treatment at the roadside for suspected fractures to the boy's arms and leg.

Due to the severity of the injuries and the remote location, emergency services arranged for the Toll rescue helicopter to land at nearby Reed Park. The boy was carefully transported to the park where he could be loaded onto the helicopter for rapid transfer to hospital.

"He has arm and leg injuries after a bicycle accident," a NSW Ambulance spokesman confirmed. "It was unwitnessed, they found him on the road with a bike on top of him."

Community Response and Investigation

Crowds of concerned residents and children gathered at the scene as emergency crews continued their treatment of the injured boy. The incident has raised questions about bicycle safety in suburban areas, particularly regarding the use of e-bikes by children.

At this stage, authorities have not confirmed whether the boy was riding an e-bike or what specific circumstances led to his injuries. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing as emergency services work to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Importance of Road Safety Awareness

This incident highlights the critical importance of:

  • Proper supervision of children riding bicycles
  • Wearing appropriate safety gear including helmets
  • Understanding road rules for cyclists of all ages
  • Community vigilance in reporting accidents promptly

The quick response from bystanders and emergency services likely played a crucial role in ensuring the boy received timely medical attention. The community now awaits further updates on his condition as investigations continue into this concerning suburban incident.
