Aussie Influencer's Baby May Need Leg Amputation After Birth

Australian Influencer's Unborn Daughter Diagnosed with Severe Leg Deformity

An Australian influencer and entrepreneur has shared a heartbreaking update regarding her third pregnancy, revealing that her unborn daughter has developed a shocking deformity in her right leg. Racquel Ferraro, the founder of the baby and children's clothing brand Cinnamon Baby, disclosed this distressing news to her more than 6000 Instagram followers, stating that her pregnancy had been progressing perfectly until the 20-week scan.

Discovery of the Condition and Medical Advice

During the scan, it was discovered that the unborn daughter's right femur was delayed in development by four weeks. Initially, the sonographer reassured Ferraro that everything would be okay. However, her doctor later presented a much graver outlook, suggesting she consider terminating the pregnancy due to the severity of the condition, known as an isolated leg length discrepancy.

Ferraro explained in an emotional four-minute video that her baby's right fibula is now six weeks behind her left leg, causing her foot to grow twisted and deformed. She emphasized that while her daughter's right leg will be approximately half the size of her left leg at birth, the baby will not experience pain, which Ferraro finds comforting.

Medical Details and Future Treatment Plans

The rest of the baby's body appears normal, with no issues detected in the brain or heart. Despite this, Ferraro has requested an amniocentesis to double-check for any major diseases that could affect her daughter's quality of life. She described the condition as rare and random, attributing it to insufficient blood supply during cell or embryo formation, with no fault on her part.

Looking ahead, Ferraro plans to meet with an orthopaedic surgeon to discuss treatment options, which may include:

  • Foot reconstruction surgery shortly after birth.
  • Leg lengthening surgery starting when the child is two and a half to three years old, involving metal rods inserted into the bones that require daily twisting for two months to promote growth.
  • Possible amputation of the leg, depending on the severity of the condition.

These options will be explored further in the coming weeks, with Ferraro expressing her focus on taking each day as it comes and hoping for a healthy and happy baby.

Personal Background and Community Support

Ferraro, who is also the owner of the linen brand Lay With Me, has committed to updating her social media community throughout this challenging journey. Recently engaged after her partner Chris proposed in Dubai in March last year, she continues to share her family's experiences with her followers, seeking support and raising awareness about such rare medical conditions.
