Geelong's Wharf Shed: A Versatile Waterfront Dining Destination
No matter the time of day or day of the week, Wharf Shed stands as a premier dining landmark on Geelong's waterfront, offering a diverse array of culinary delights to savour. With its prime location and commitment to excellence, this venue has become a staple for locals and tourists alike over the past five years.
A Prime Location with a Community Focus
Situated at 15 Eastern Beach Rd, Wharf Shed boasts an absolute waterfront position adjacent to Steampacket Gardens, placing it at the epicentre of Geelong's vibrant waterfront activities. General manager Matt Connell emphasises the venue's responsibility to the city and community, stating, "We're very aware of how important this location is to the city and the community and the growth of the waterfront." The space can accommodate up to 300 people downstairs and another 200 upstairs, making it a versatile hub for dining and events.
Modern Australian Cuisine with International Influences
Head chef Chris Hudich and the culinary team craft a menu described as modern Australian with international tweaks, reflecting diverse cultural influences. Open from 9am daily except Christmas Day, Wharf Shed serves breakfast until 11.30am, followed by a full menu until late. Matt Connell notes, "It's very much a venue and restaurant. It's not a special occasional restaurant, it's an everyday restaurant people can be a part of." The focus is on affordability for families, with seasonal ingredients sourced from local suppliers like bakeries and wineries.
Seasonal Menus and Signature Dishes
The menu changes every three months to highlight local, seasonal produce. While classics like beer battered fish and chips, seafood platters, and chicken parmigiana remain staples, current offerings include paella, roasted pork belly with spicy watermelon salad, sourdough prawn toast, and pan-seared Atlantic salmon on whipped feta. Breakfast features items like fresh figs and rhubarb, with plans to showcase winter ingredients such as apples and pears. Signature desserts include a dark chocolate brownie with house-made truffled ice cream.
A Curated Sensory Experience
Attention to detail extends beyond the menu, with Matt Connell aiming to create a sensory journey for visitors. "Visually there'll be flowers that are only in season for this time of year. The smells that are in the restaurant and the noises that are being made and the music that's being played – it's all very curated," he explains. This holistic approach ensures a welcoming atmosphere that complements the wholesome, flavourful dishes.
Community Integration and Future Outlook
Wharf Shed operates as a hybrid cafe, restaurant, pub, and function space, ingraining itself into the community's daily routines. Co-owners Andrew Clark and Billy Brownless, who also run the Cremorne Hotel and The Commo, bring extensive hospitality experience. Matt adds, "We're plating up stuff that's wholesome, it's full of heart, full of flavour, and that would be what we are known for." With a commitment to inclusivity and showcasing Geelong on a plate, Wharf Shed continues to refine its offerings to keep customers returning.
