Victorian Family Bakery Wins Coveted Hot Cross Bun Title at National Competition

A family-owned Victorian bakery has secured the prestigious title of Australia's best hot cross bun, triumphing at the 2026 Victorian Baking Show held in Bendigo on March 14. Whittlesea Bakehouse, located in the regional town of Whittlesea, took out the top prize with their traditional hot cross buns, which have been flying off the shelves since their victory.

Secret Recipe Success: Passion and Quality Ingredients

Adrian Caporetto, manager of Whittlesea Bakehouse, revealed that the key to their award-winning hot cross buns lies in getting the simple things right. "My buns are the best. It all comes down to good fruit, good ingredients, and I believe if you've got the love and the passion, the magic just works," Caporetto explained. When pressed about his winning recipe, he remained tight-lipped but emphasised his commitment to traditional methods.

"A little bit of this, a little bit of that and fresh spices, that's it," he said. "This one's old school ... I probably would have been doing this one about 25 odd years now." This dedication to time-honoured techniques has clearly paid off, with the bakery's hot cross buns now recognised as the finest in the country.

Bakery's Impressive Track Record of Baking Excellence

Whittlesea Bakehouse is no stranger to baking competition success, having previously won titles for best sausage rolls and plain meat pies. At the most recent Victorian Baking Show, the bakery also achieved third place in the best vanilla slice category. Caporetto is already setting his sights on future victories, stating, "That's probably the next one we'll go for. That one or the pastie actually, I'm looking for the pastie one. We've got fresh cut, hand cut root vegetables, can't go wrong."
