The Meat & Wine Co Opens in South Perth's Historic Coco's Site Dec 12
New Steakhouse Opens at Former Coco's Site in South Perth

One of South Perth's most iconic dining locations is set to begin a new chapter as The Meat & Wine Co prepares to open its doors on December 12, marking a significant transformation of the space formerly occupied by the beloved Coco's restaurant for 35 years.

A New Era for a Waterside Landmark

The premium steakhouse chain, part of the Seagrass Boutique Hospitality Group that also operates 6HEAD and Hunter & Barrel, secured the prime location earlier this year after Coco's announced it could not extend its lease in April. The venue boasts enviable views of Perth's CBD skyline and the Swan River, positioned just a short ferry ride from the company's existing Palace Hotel location along St Georges Terrace.

Laurie Thorpe, State Manager WA for The Meat & Wine Co, acknowledged the significant legacy left by the previous occupant while expressing confidence in their ability to contribute to the local dining scene. "South Perth has a proud legacy of exceptional restaurants," Mr Thorpe stated. "Building on the success of our Perth CBD venue, we're confident the South Perth venue will elevate the local dining scene. We're excited to create a destination that resonates with both locals and visitors, just as Coco's did for so many years."

South African Heritage Meets Modern Australian Dining

Exclusive renders of the complete refurbishment reveal a strong emphasis on the restaurant chain's South African heritage, with award-winning designers COOOP.co creating a 200-seat space centered around a communal fire pit. The design, aptly named Cape Point, aims to blend Australian modern dining sensibilities with South African soul, drawing inspiration from ancient cultural traditions of storytelling and gathering.

Callie Van Der Merwe, founder of COOOP.co, explained the philosophical approach behind the design: "It pays homage to the earliest communal hubs where people came together to share stories, pass on knowledge, and build social bonds."

Culinary Experience and Safari Menu

The venue will feature the restaurant's signature à la carte menu with premium steak offerings, alongside the introduction of a special Safari Menu that delves deeper into the roots of South African cuisine. Under the guidance of South African-born Head of Culinary Sean Hall, diners can expect authentic dishes from his homeland, including the hearty lamb curry known as Bunny Chow and the slow-braised delicacy of Lamb Potjie.

The beverage program will celebrate the fruitful wine regions of both Western Australia and South Africa, offering patrons a comprehensive dining experience that honors both local and heritage influences. The opening on December 12 marks an exciting new phase for the cherished South Perth location, bringing a fresh culinary concept to one of Perth's most picturesque dining destinations.
