Newcastle dancer and physiotherapist Shelby Candian has launched a specialist clinic dedicated to the unique needs of dancers. The clinic, named Dance Physio Newcastle, aims to provide tailored care for dancers of all levels, from beginners to professionals.
Addressing a Gap in Healthcare
Candian, who has a background in both dance and physiotherapy, identified a lack of specialized services for dancers in the region. She recognized that dancers often face specific injuries and require targeted rehabilitation and prevention strategies. The clinic focuses on dance-specific assessments, injury prevention, and performance enhancement.
Services Offered
The clinic offers a range of services including one-on-one physiotherapy sessions, dance-specific strength and conditioning programs, and education on injury prevention. Candian also provides workshops for dance schools and companies to promote safe dance practices.
“I wanted to create a space where dancers feel understood and receive care that speaks to their unique needs,” Candian said. “Dance is an art form that demands physical excellence, and our goal is to help dancers achieve that safely.”
A Personal Journey
Candian’s own experience as a dancer fueled her passion for this niche. She sustained injuries during her dance career and found that general physiotherapy often fell short. This inspired her to specialize and eventually open her own clinic.
“I know firsthand how frustrating it can be when your body doesn’t cooperate with your art,” she added. “I want to help dancers stay on stage and perform at their best.”
Community Response
The local dance community has welcomed the clinic. Dance teachers and students have expressed excitement about having access to specialized care. The clinic is located in Newcastle West, making it accessible for dancers across the region.
“Having a physio who understands dance is a game-changer,” said one local dance teacher. “It’s not just about treating injuries; it’s about preventing them and improving technique.”
Future Plans
Candian plans to expand the clinic’s services to include telehealth consultations and workshops for regional dance communities. She also hopes to collaborate with dance organizations to promote dancer health and wellness.
“The response has been overwhelming,” Candian said. “I’m excited to see how we can grow and support more dancers in the future.”
