The Mildura Hot Air Balloon Festival 2026 transformed the Murray River skyline into a vibrant canvas as more than 50 balloons lifted off at dawn, attracting thousands of spectators from across Australia.
Dawn Ascension Over the Murray
From July 10 to 12, the festival saw a record number of participants, with balloons launching from the Mildura city center and drifting over the Murray River. The event featured special-shaped balloons, including a giant kangaroo and a teacup, delighting families and photography enthusiasts.
According to festival director Sarah Thompson, “This year’s festival was our biggest yet, with perfect weather conditions allowing for all scheduled flights. The sight of so many colorful balloons against the sunrise is truly magical.”
Community and Economic Impact
The festival injected an estimated $5 million into the local economy, with hotels and restaurants reporting full bookings. Local businesses set up stalls offering food, wine, and crafts, while live music and children’s activities ran throughout the weekend.
Mildura Mayor Liam Jones said, “The balloon festival has become a cornerstone of our winter tourism calendar. It showcases our region’s natural beauty and brings the community together.”
Photographic Highlights
Professional and amateur photographers captured stunning images of balloons reflecting in the Murray River, silhouetted against the orange dawn sky, and floating past the historic Mildura water tower. The festival also hosted a photography competition, with winners announced on the final day.
Organizers have already confirmed the dates for the 2027 festival, promising even more balloons and activities.
