Dog's Close Shark Encounter Captured on Drone at Perth Beach

A dramatic encounter between a tiger shark and a dog was caught on drone footage at a Perth beach. The video shows the shark swimming into ankle-deep water, coming within centimetres of a groodle named Olive before both quickly retreated.

The clip, filmed by drone enthusiast Lexo Aveleyra, shows the striped shark moving through clear water just metres from the sand. As the shark enters shallow water, Olive is seen standing in front of it. The two react swiftly, with the dog darting back to the beach and the shark thrashing as it turns and swims back to deeper water.

Aveleyra posted the footage on Instagram, describing how she spotted the tiger shark while flying her drone on a 40°C summer day. She followed the shark as it cruised toward shallower water, waiting for a clean shot, when it suddenly turned back, likely sensing movement. The shark investigated Olive, resulting in a brief face-to-face encounter.

Viewers expressed shock at how close the shark came to shore. One commented, 'Wow that was right up to the shoreline! So unsafe.' Another said, 'This is such a close call, but absolutely stunning footage.'

Tiger sharks are known to move into shallow coastal waters during warmer months, often hunting stingrays, fish, and turtles. Aveleyra noted that sharks are in their natural environment and entering the ocean is a personal choice, emphasising the importance of awareness.
