Two men have been formally charged by Queensland police following a devastating and deadly collision on a major highway that involved an allegedly stolen truck being pursued the wrong way by local business owners. The tragic incident resulted in the death of a young man and left another individual in critical condition with severe injuries.
Fatal Crash Details and Victim Identified
Andre Roberts, aged 26, was tragically killed while driving home from work on Tuesday, February 17, just after 10:30 PM. His Honda Accord was struck head-on by an allegedly stolen white flat-bed Hino truck that was travelling the wrong direction on the Bruce Highway near Burpengary, north of Brisbane. The impact was so severe that the Honda burst into flames immediately, leading to Roberts' death at the scene.
Friends and family have since paid heartfelt tributes to Roberts, describing him as an incredible person with a contagious laugh and smile that brightened the lives of those around him. The shocking moment of collision was captured on video by passengers in another vehicle travelling south in the correct lanes, with a woman heard exclaiming "That's insane" moments before the catastrophic impact.
Pursuit by Business Owners and Police Investigation
Separate footage obtained by 7NEWS reveals a convoy of cars seemingly following the truck along an industrial street just minutes before the fatal crash. Detective Inspector David Harbison later clarified that these individuals were a group of business owners who had allegedly observed the vehicle being driven slowly around the area earlier that evening, as if someone inside was casing businesses.
Police allege that multiple vehicles then followed the truck north onto the Bruce Highway before it collided with a barrier at a weighbridge. While most pursuers stopped at that point, the truck continued on until the fatal head-on collision with Roberts' vehicle. Following the incident, police declared a crime scene after reports indicated one car was being chased by multiple vehicles.
Police Raid and Charges Laid
In a significant development, detectives executed a search warrant at a property in Redcliffe on Friday, February 20, seizing stolen property and a firearm directly linked to the truck involved in the crash. As a result of their investigation, two men from Redcliffe, aged 49 and 36, have been charged with serious offences including entering premises, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and weapons-related crimes.
Police confirmed they have now identified all vehicles involved in the incident, with several individuals continuing to assist with the ongoing investigation. The driver of the allegedly stolen Hino truck sustained serious head, neck, and pelvic injuries and remains in critical condition in hospital, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
