A tragic single-vehicle accident on the Hume Highway has claimed the life of a passenger and left the driver fighting for survival in critical condition.
Emergency Response to Early Morning Crash
Emergency services rushed to the scene near Gunning, approximately one hour from Canberra, after receiving reports of a car leaving the roadway and rolling at approximately 6.45am on Sunday, November 30.
NSW Ambulance paramedics provided immediate medical attention to both occupants at the location. Despite their efforts, the passenger could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver received extensive treatment from paramedics before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital by medical helicopter. Medical authorities have confirmed the driver remains in a critical condition.
Police Investigation and Road Closures
Officers from the Hume Police District have established a comprehensive crime scene and launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
The incident has caused significant disruption to Sunday morning traffic, with all southbound lanes of the Hume Highway at Gunning closed since 10am. The southbound on-ramp from Gundaroo has also been shut to motorists.
Traffic management authorities have implemented diversion routes, redirecting southbound vehicles via Canberra using the Federal Highway and Barton Highway.
Second Tragedy on Dangerous Stretch
This marks the second fatality on the same section of the Hume Highway within just two days, following another fatal crash where a vehicle left the road and collided with a signpost.
The concerning pattern of serious accidents on this stretch of roadway has raised questions about road safety measures in the area.
Police have confirmed that a detailed report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner as part of the standard procedure for fatal road accidents.
