Man Airlifted to Hospital After Police Pursuit Ends in Terara Tree Crash

A critical incident investigation has been launched following a dramatic police pursuit that culminated in a serious crash in Terara during the early hours of Friday morning, February 6. The incident has left a man hospitalised with significant injuries after his vehicle collided with a tree.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Crash

The series of events began around 11:30 PM on Thursday evening when police officers patrolling the Nowra area observed an allegedly unregistered Kia sedan travelling along Greenwell Point Road. Authorities signalled for the driver to stop, but he allegedly failed to comply, prompting the initiation of a police pursuit.

This initial pursuit was terminated a short time later due to escalating safety concerns. However, the situation escalated again approximately fifty minutes later, at around 12:20 AM on Friday, when police sighted the same Kia vehicle being driven on Victoria Parade in Terara.

Officers once again directed the driver to pull over. When he allegedly refused to stop for a second time, a further pursuit commenced. This chase came to a sudden and violent end on Milbank Road when the Kia sedan left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

Emergency Response and Investigation

The impact of the collision was severe enough to trap the driver inside the vehicle. Paramedics rushed to the scene and treated a 32-year-old man for serious leg injuries. Given the severity of his condition, he was subsequently airlifted to St George Hospital for urgent medical care.

Police have established a crime scene at the location. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and the preceding police pursuits will be led by a Critical Incident Team from the Lake Illawarra Police District.

This investigation will undergo a rigorous review process. It will be scrutinised by the Professional Standards Command and will also be overseen by the independent Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) to ensure transparency and accountability.
