Kwinana Freeway Reopens After Fatal Baldivis Crash

Emergency services have cleared the scene of a fatal crash on the Kwinana Freeway in Baldivis, allowing southbound lanes to reopen after a lengthy ten-hour closure that severely disrupted Tuesday morning's peak hour traffic.

Major Freeway Closure and Traffic Chaos

The southbound lanes of the Kwinana Freeway were shut at Mundijong Road following the tragic incident, with authorities urging motorists to seek alternative routes to avoid the area. The closure remained in effect throughout the early hours of Tuesday morning, leading to significant traffic congestion on surrounding approaches as commuters faced lengthy delays.

Details of the Fatal Collision

Major Crash investigators reported that a blue Ford Falcon sedan was travelling south on the Kwinana Freeway around 11.20pm on Monday night when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree. The impact proved fatal for the 44-year-old female passenger, who sustained life-threatening injuries and died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency crews.

The 40-year-old male driver was transported to Royal Perth Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Emergency services had been working at the crash site since late Monday night, with traffic remaining heavy in the vicinity for several hours into Tuesday morning as investigations continued.

Additional Traffic Incidents Across Perth

Meanwhile, Perth's road network experienced further disruptions with a separate crash on Leach Highway westbound near the Kwinana Freeway entry at Bull Creek. This incident forced the closure of the left lane, adding to the morning's traffic challenges.

In a separate development, debris that had partially blocked traffic on the Mitchell Freeway southbound at Hodges Drive in Joondalup has been successfully cleared. Main Roads confirmed the obstruction was a metal object located in the left lane, which had been causing delays before removal crews addressed the situation.

The reopening of the Kwinana Freeway brings relief to Perth commuters after a night of tragedy and significant transportation disruption across the metropolitan area.
