Police Launch Manhunt for E-Bike Rider After Collision and Flee in Warrnambool
Authorities in Victoria are urgently seeking an e-bike rider involved in a dramatic crash with a ute on Raglan Pde in Warrnambool, southwest Victoria. The incident occurred at approximately 5.45pm on March 23, when the rider reportedly ignored a give way sign at Parker St and rode directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle.
Dashcam footage released by Victoria Police captures the moment of impact, showing the rider skidding across the road before quickly recovering and riding away from the scene without stopping. Police have described the rider as a Caucasian male, around 160cm tall, with black hair and a medium build. At the time of the crash, he was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top with the phrase "play for keeps" and a black and white helmet.
Nationwide Crackdown on E-Bike Safety Following Recent Tragedies
This incident comes amid heightened concerns over e-bike safety across Australia, following a series of accidents and fatalities. Just one day after the Warrnambool crash, two teenage boys died in Sydney when their petrol-powered trail bike collided with a bus. Social media accounts linked to the boys revealed videos of them performing stunts on e-bikes prior to the tragedy.
In response, governments are implementing stricter regulations. The NSW Government has introduced a bill to parliament, granting police the power to seize and crush illegal e-bikes. Similarly, the Queensland Government announced tough new laws set to take effect from July 1, requiring riders to hold a valid learner's permit or licence. Parents who supply e-bikes to underage children could also face significant fines.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli emphasized the need for personal responsibility, stating, "These are a weapon, and they're a dangerous weapon. In the past three years, there's been over a dozen people killed in Queensland, and there's been 6000 injuries, many of them life-changing and serious."

Victoria Police have urged anyone with information about the Warrnambool incident, including witnesses or individuals with additional footage, to contact Crime Stoppers immediately.
