Drivers travelling along one of Wollongong's major thoroughfares are set to encounter a significant change to their daily commute, with speed limits being formally reduced in the coming days.
Corrimal Street to Become a 50km/h Zone
Transport for NSW has confirmed that work will commence this Sunday to permanently lower the speed limit on Corrimal Street. The existing 60km/h signs between the Bank Street intersection and George Hanley Drive will be removed and replaced with new 50km/h signage.
This infrastructure adjustment is expected to take approximately five nights to complete, after which the new, reduced speed limit will be officially enforced across the entire stretch.
Safety Improvements Drive Change
The decision follows a comprehensive speed zone review conducted by Transport for NSW, which identified significant safety benefits in reducing vehicle speeds along this corridor. Both Wollongong City Council and NSW Police have publicly endorsed the change, highlighting its importance for community safety.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson emphasised that "speed management plays a vital role in shaping behaviour on our roads and streets." The review specifically found that a 50km/h limit would "greatly improve safety on the street, which has a high number of roadside access points and activity, including retail, restaurants and residential apartments."
Aligning with City Planning
This traffic modification aligns with Wollongong City Council's strategic vision for the area. In 2025, the council released its City Centre Movement and Place Plan, which formally recognised Corrimal Street as one of the most active and vibrant places within the Wollongong city centre.
The reduced speed limit is designed to support this high level of pedestrian and commercial activity, creating a safer environment for both motorists and the community members who frequent the area's businesses and residential buildings.
Notable Location Features
The affected section of Corrimal Street includes several notable features that underscore the need for enhanced safety measures:
- A red-light speed camera operates at the Crown Street intersection within this zone.
- The same intersection was the site of a fatal traffic collision in 2022, adding urgency to safety improvements.
- The area experiences substantial traffic flow as a key connector road through Wollongong.
Motorists are advised to pay close attention to their speedometers and the changing road signage during the transition period. The permanent implementation of the 50km/h limit represents a proactive step toward reducing accident risks and improving overall road safety in one of Wollongong's busiest urban corridors.
