A Perth woman narrowly escaped injury after an out-of-control car smashed through her front fence and into her home in Nollamara during the early hours of Friday morning, waking her with a terrifying explosion-like sound.
Early-Morning Chaos in Nollamara
Judith Andrews was sleeping in her bedroom at the corner of Woodchester Road and Flinders Street in Nollamara when she was jolted awake by a loud bang around 4am. The small car, driven by a young woman on her way to work, had lost control, squealing its brakes before crashing through the fence and into the side of the house, pushing the bedroom wall inwards.
Ms Andrews described the harrowing experience, stating, "After the squeal of the brakes and explosion, there was this long hissing sound and I thought, 'this is close, it sounds like the car is right outside'." When she ventured outside, she discovered the vehicle had come to a stop just metres from where she had been sleeping, leaving a mess of stones, bricks, and shattered glass in its wake.
Residents Recount Terrifying Ordeal
Another occupant of the home, Allison Luthi, echoed the shock, comparing the crash to an explosion. "You're in a deep sleep and then hear an explosion," she said. "It was pretty scary at the time." Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, with WA Police confirming no reports of harm.
The driver, who was outside the car by the time the residents emerged, appeared shaken but was primarily concerned about potential injuries inside the house. Ms Andrews noted that two passing cars had stopped to assist her, highlighting the community response to the sudden emergency.
History of Accidents on Flinders Street
Ms Andrews, who has lived in the house for 27 years, revealed that Flinders Street is notorious for near misses and accidents. "It's the first time a car has come through the fence, but I've had cars come around the corner, lose control and end up on the verge," she explained, underscoring ongoing safety concerns in the area.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by erratic driving in residential neighbourhoods, with emergency services quickly responding to the scene to assess the damage and ensure public safety.
