Tragic Loss: Boy, 12, Dies After Five-Car Pile-Up on Melbourne's Monash Freeway
A young boy has tragically passed away from his injuries two days after a severe five-car crash on a major Melbourne freeway, leaving the community in mourning and authorities investigating the devastating incident.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The 12-year-old boy was travelling in a Mazda 3 when it became involved in a multi-vehicle pile-up on the Monash Freeway near the Stud Road off-ramp in Dandenong North around 2pm on Sunday. He was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious upper and lower body injuries, where he sadly died on Tuesday.
Two other occupants of the Mazda were also transported to hospital. A 46-year-old woman from Sunbury remains in hospital in a critical condition as of Wednesday, while an 8-year-old girl sustained minor injuries.
Injuries and Hospitalizations Across Multiple Vehicles
In a blue Mitsubishi, three of the four occupants—a 68-year-old Campbellfield woman, a 39-year-old Glenroy woman, and a 6-year-old girl—were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of a BMW, a Volkswagen Tiguan, and a white Mitsubishi escaped unharmed.
Police have spoken to the driver of the BMW, a 34-year-old man from Berwick, who was subsequently released without charges at this stage.
Major Traffic Disruptions and Ongoing Investigation
The crash caused significant traffic delays on the freeway, with vehicles backed up for kilometres as emergency services responded to the scene. Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are continuing their probe into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash, possesses dashcam footage, or has any relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers immediately to assist with the investigation.
