A major police operation targeting impaired drivers in the Geelong region has resulted in sixteen motorists being charged over a single weekend. The high-visibility blitz, which ran from Friday, 17 May 2024, to Sunday, 19 May 2024, saw officers from the Geelong Highway Patrol and local uniform police units conducting extensive checks across the area.
Weekend Operation Yields Shocking Results
The coordinated crackdown focused on removing dangerous drivers from Geelong's roads. Police conducted numerous breath and drug tests at various locations, leading to the significant haul of alleged offenders. Among those caught was a P-plate driver from Norlane, who returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.073. This is above the zero-tolerance limit that applies to all probationary licence holders in Victoria.
In a particularly concerning incident, a 43-year-old Grovedale man was intercepted after police observed his vehicle being driven erratically. He subsequently provided a positive preliminary drug test and is expected to be charged on summons for driving under the influence of drugs.
A Stark Reminder of Ongoing Risks
Leading Senior Constable Ben Rix of the Geelong Highway Patrol expressed clear disappointment at the results. He stated that catching sixteen drivers in just three days was a sobering reminder that some individuals continue to disregard the law and the safety of others. "It's disappointing that we still have people getting behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs," Senior Constable Rix said. "The risks are well-known, and the consequences can be devastating for families and the community."
The operation forms part of a broader, ongoing effort by Victoria Police to reduce road trauma. Authorities have emphasised that driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs significantly increases the risk of causing a fatal or serious injury collision.
Enforcement and Education to Continue
Police have vowed to maintain a strong presence on Geelong's roads, with regular and unpredictable enforcement operations planned. The message from law enforcement is unequivocal: if you choose to drive under the influence, you will be caught. The potential penalties for these offences are severe and can include:
- Heavy fines amounting to thousands of dollars.
- Immediate loss of licence through suspension.
- Criminal charges and a permanent record.
- Mandatory behaviour change programs.
- In the worst cases, imprisonment.
The community is urged to plan ahead. If you are drinking, designate a sober driver, use public transport, book a taxi, or arrange a ride-share. The simple decision to not get behind the wheel while impaired can save lives. Police also encourage the public to report suspected drink or drug drivers by calling 000 if the vehicle is an immediate danger.
