Man dies after being pulled from water near Currarong

A man has died after being pulled from the water at a popular South Coast swimming spot on Friday afternoon, prompting a police investigation and urgent safety warnings.

Emergency Response at Lobster Bay

Emergency services were called to Lobster Bay, near Currarong on the Beecroft Peninsula, at approximately 12.40pm on Friday, January 2, 2026, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Upon arrival, police discovered that members of the public had already retrieved an unresponsive man from the water. The man, believed to be aged in his 50s, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics but could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the location.

Police Investigation and Coroner's Report

Police have established a crime scene at Lobster Bay as part of their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death. A report is now being prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Acting Inspector Teneille Keith from the South Coast Police District addressed the media, using the tragic incident to highlight critical water safety messages during the summer period.

Authorities Issue Summer Safety Plea

"While we have welcomed a beautiful summer, it is also the peak season of drowning incidents," Acting Inspector Keith stated. She urged the public to stay alert to weather conditions and to carefully assess whether it is safe to enter the water.

"Please stay alert to the weather conditions and decide whether you should go into the water," she advised. "Severe weather condition is a big challenge even to experienced divers."

Lobster Bay, a north-facing beach within Abrahams Bosom Reserve, is a favoured location for swimming and snorkelling. The spot is only accessible via a roughly 90-minute walk from the Abrahams Bosom car park, which can complicate emergency access and response times.
