A summer evening at a popular Perth beach turned to tragedy when two 12-year-old girls were caught in a dangerous rip current, leaving one fighting for her life in hospital.
Surfer's Brave Rescue Amid Holiday Crowds
The incident unfolded in front of numerous beachgoers at Trigg Beach around 6:30pm on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, just days before Christmas. According to WA Police, a report came in that two people had been "caught in a rip and pulled out to sea".
Upon arrival, officers confirmed both swimmers were young girls. A quick-thinking surfer managed to rescue one of the girls and bring her safely back to shore. However, the situation was far more dire for her friend.
Frantic Efforts to Save a Young Life
The same surfer located the second girl, who was unresponsive in the water. He brought her to shore where an immediate and coordinated emergency response began.
Police officers, volunteer lifeguards, and two off-duty doctors who were at the beach commenced CPR on the girl in a desperate bid to save her life. Paramedics from St John WA soon arrived at the scene and took over advanced life support.
The critically injured girl was then transported under police escort to Perth Children's Hospital for emergency treatment. Police confirmed on Wednesday morning that the young victim remained in a critical condition.
A Stark Reminder of Beach Dangers
This harrowing event serves as a sobering reminder of the ever-present dangers at Australian beaches, even during the festive season. Rip currents are a leading cause of coastal drowning incidents and can form suddenly, even on seemingly calm days.
WA Police continue to investigate the full circumstances of the incident. The community now waits anxiously for news on the young girl's condition, with thoughts for both children and their families during this traumatic time.
