The replacement of the damaged Hamelin Pool boardwalk in Shark Bay is now underway, marking a significant step towards restoring visitor access while safeguarding one of the world's oldest living fossils.

The new 260-metre boardwalk comes with a price tag of $4.6 million and is designed to provide a safe and sustainable pathway for tourists. The original structure suffered severe damage during Cyclone Seroja in April 2021, forcing its closure. Authorities determined that a full replacement was necessary to minimise environmental impacts on the delicate stromatolites.
Protecting Ancient Life
Stromatolites are layered sedimentary rock formations created by microbial mats. They are considered some of the oldest living fossils on Earth, offering a glimpse into the planet's early history. The boardwalk's design aims to keep visitors at a safe distance while allowing them to appreciate these unique natural wonders.
Extensive planning and approvals were required due to the site's remote location and environmental sensitivity. The construction approach employs specialist techniques to avoid disturbing the stromatolites and the surrounding ecosystem.
Location and Significance
Hamelin Pool is situated within the Shark Bay World Heritage Area in the Gascoyne region, approximately 694 kilometres south of Perth. It is a popular attraction for visitors to Shark Bay, drawing tourists from around the world.
Gascoyne Minister Hannah Beazley expressed enthusiasm about the project. "The Hamelin Pool stromatolites have always been a popular attraction for visitors to Shark Bay," Ms Beazley said. "The new boardwalk is 30 metres longer than the old one and is designed to allow visitors to fully experience the beauty of this natural wonder while ensuring its protection for future generations."
Since the cyclone, the stromatolites have been fenced off to prevent damage. The new boardwalk will restore safe access and enhance the visitor experience with improved viewing platforms and interpretive signage.
