WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch Fires Up Bunnings Grill for Record-Breaking Suicide Prevention Fundraiser

In a heartwarming community effort, WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch has taken to the Bunnings grill, joining volunteers to kickstart a monumental fundraising and record attempt aimed at breaking the cycle of suicide. The event, a 102-hour sausage sizzle at Bunnings Joondalup, began at 10am on Thursday and is set to continue until 4pm on Monday, with the goal of raising $20,000 for mental health initiatives.

Breaking Records for a Cause

This sizzling marathon is poised to break the world record for the longest non-stop sausage sizzle, showcasing the dedication of volunteers and community leaders. All proceeds from the BBQ will support the Lions Club of WA's Beacon of Light program, an early intervention initiative focused on providing timely aid to individuals in need of mental health support. The fundraiser aims to help launch the new Mind Health Van, a mobile service that will travel throughout the Perth community to offer crucial mental health assistance.

Commissioner Blanch's Support and Personal Touch

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch, who opted for a sausage with minimal condiments, expressed his enthusiasm for the cause. "I think our world could do with a lot more volunteers," he said, praising the Lions Club's work in areas such as youth support, emergency aid, disaster relief, and mental health. "I'm here to support volunteers, and I also love the Bunnings weekend and a bit of therapy. I'm here most weekends where I'll buy a tool I don't need and eat a sausage that I definitely don't need."

Blanch emphasized the importance of early intervention, stating, "I just spent a bit of time over at the Lions Club to help people who are going through tough times. I do really appreciate the work of Lions Club, because it's about getting in early, helping people early, and preventing, hopefully, any involvement with police whatsoever." His participation highlights the collaborative spirit between law enforcement and community organizations in addressing mental health challenges.

Community Impact and Future Goals

The fundraiser not only aims to set a new world record but also to make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health issues. By supporting the Mind Health Van, the initiative seeks to bring mental health resources directly to Perth residents, ensuring timely access to care. This event underscores the power of community-driven efforts in fostering resilience and promoting well-being across Western Australia.
