An out-of-control bushfire is threatening homes and lives in Western Australia's Midwest region, prompting urgent evacuation orders for multiple communities. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has declared the situation dangerous and immediate.
Immediate Evacuation Orders Issued
Residents in Bluff Point, Spalding and Sunset Beach have been told to leave immediately as the fast-moving fire continues to threaten properties. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued a stark warning: "If the way is clear, leave now for a safer place."
Authorities provided specific evacuation directions to ensure resident safety. "Those to the north of the river leave in a northerly direction. Those to the south of the river leave in a southerly direction," the department advised. They emphasized that leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger and urged people not to adopt a 'wait and see' approach.
Fire Spread and Impact
The blaze was first reported around 10.30am on Sunday and is moving quickly in a northerly direction, according to latest reports. The fire's rapid spread has already caused significant disruption to essential services.
Power to over 3000 homes and businesses has been affected by the bushfire, leaving many without electricity. The communities of Waggrakine and Moresby have been rendered unsafe due to fallen trees and power lines, and residents who have already left these areas have been advised not to return.
Several schools will remain closed on Monday as a precautionary measure, including Waggrakine Primary School, Walkaway Primary School and Northampton District High School.
Emergency Response and Weather Conditions
The Department of Communities has established an evacuation centre at the QEII Seniors and Community Centre in Geraldton for those requiring assistance. Meanwhile, residents in Glenfield have been advised to prepare to leave, while alert levels have been downgraded in Cullalla and Mooliabeenee.
Dangerous fire conditions continue into Monday, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting extreme fire danger in several districts including the Midwest Coast, Midwest Inland, Lesueur, Yarra Yarra and Swan Inland North. These conditions are expected to challenge firefighting efforts throughout the day.
