A new play exploring the life and legacy of Paul O'Grady's iconic drag character Lily Savage is set to premiere at Leicester's Curve Theatre in February 2026. Written by Danny Beard, the production promises to delve into the origins and impact of one of Britain's most beloved entertainers.
Play Details
The play, titled "Lily: A New Play," will run from February 10 to 22, 2026, at the Curve Theatre. Danny Beard, known for winning RuPaul's Drag Race UK, has penned the script, which focuses on Lily Savage's rise to fame in the 1990s and her enduring influence on British pop culture.
Paul O'Grady, who passed away in 2023, first introduced Lily Savage in the 1980s as a drag act in London's gay clubs. The character later became a household name through television appearances, including hosting "The Paul O'Grady Show" and the game show "Blankety Blank."
Behind the Scenes
Beard, a lifelong fan of O'Grady, expressed his excitement about bringing Lily's story to the stage. "Paul was a trailblazer, and Lily was a beacon of joy and resilience," Beard said in a statement. "This play is a celebration of his genius and the character that changed so many lives."
The production is directed by Luke Sheppard, with design by Soutra Gilmour. The cast is yet to be announced, but the creative team promises a vibrant and heartfelt tribute to O'Grady's legacy.
Curve Theatre's Commitment
Curve Theatre's artistic director, Nikolai Foster, praised the project as a fitting homage to O'Grady's connection to Leicester. "Paul had a special bond with our city, and we are honored to host this world premiere," Foster said. "Danny's script captures the wit, warmth, and defiance that made Lily Savage an icon."
Tickets for the production go on sale later this year, with previews starting February 10. The play is expected to attract fans from across the UK, eager to celebrate O'Grady's extraordinary contribution to entertainment.
