London's Metropolitan Police have arrested a man in connection with the 2017 'Putney Bridge pusher' incident, where a woman was shoved into oncoming traffic. The suspect, aged 42, was taken into custody on Tuesday morning on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody for questioning.
Details of the Incident
The attack occurred on June 15, 2017, when a 33-year-old woman was pushed from the pavement onto the busy A219 road near Putney Bridge. She suffered serious injuries, including a fractured skull and broken ribs, but survived. The assailant fled the scene and had remained unidentified until now.
Investigation Breakthrough
Detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command reviewed CCTV footage and appealed for witnesses over the years. A breakthrough came when new forensic evidence linked the suspect to the scene. Police have not released the man's name but confirm he is from the London area.
Community Reaction
Local residents expressed relief at the arrest. 'It's been a long time coming,' said one Putney resident. 'The community has been on edge knowing this person was still out there.' The victim, who has since recovered, has been informed of the arrest.
Police Statement
Detective Inspector James Hartley said: 'This was a shocking and unprovoked attack that left a woman with life-changing injuries. We hope this arrest brings some closure to the victim and the community. The investigation remains ongoing.'
The suspect is expected to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court later this week. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
