CAROL: Perth's Hilarious and Heartfelt Christmas Stage Spectacular
New Christmas Play CAROL Premieres in Perth

Perth is set to experience a Christmas story that truly reflects its unique festive spirit with the premiere of CAROL, a brand-new production from the Black Swan State Theatre Company.

A Perth Christmas on Stage

Playwright Andrea Gibbs describes the show as the essence of a Perth Christmas, complete with melting pavlovas, sunburnt shoulders, and the chaotic last-minute rush for presents. "CAROL is that, but fun," Gibbs says. "It's our Christmas on stage: funny, warm, a bit chaotic, and painfully relatable in all the best ways." She also highlights the perfect escape from the summer heat, inviting audiences to enjoy a cool, dark theatre and a good laugh.

The Heart of the Show

At the centre of this festive spectacle is Sally-Anne Upton, known for her roles in Neighbours and Wentworth, who takes on the titular role. Gibbs enthusiastically describes Upton as "a bloody weapon" whose performance brings a powerful mix of humour, grit, and emotional clarity to the character of Carol.

The production is further brought to life with original music performed live at every show, alongside creatively adapted Christmas classics. Gibbs promises audiences a "big, proper laugh" but also moments of genuine vulnerability that highlight what truly matters during the festive season.

Why Local Storytelling Matters

CAROL is firmly rooted in Western Australian storytelling, showcasing what Gibbs calls a classic "Perth Christmas in all its sweaty glory." She emphasises the importance of creating homegrown productions, stating that it keeps local voices loud and gives Perth audiences the joy of seeing their own lives and community reflected on stage.

The show aims to offer solidarity and a sense of being seen. "And if it makes someone look at a woman like Carol, someone older, easy to miss, and go, 'Yeah, I see you,' then that's the part that matters to me," Gibbs shares.

CAROL is playing at the Heath Ledger Theatre from 22 November to 14 December. For those seeking a heartfelt, humorous, and authentically Perth take on the holidays, this production is the perfect cultural outing.
