Perth's television news landscape is undergoing a significant and historic shift, as the iconic presenting partnership of Susannah Carr and Rick Ardon steps back from daily broadcasts. The legendary duo, who have fronted 7News Perth's flagship 6pm bulletin for a world-record 40 years, will transition to a reduced on-air schedule from January 2026.
A New Chapter for a Broadcasting Institution
This change marks the end of an era for one of Australian television's most enduring partnerships. Carr and Ardon will continue to anchor the 6pm news, but only on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. For the remainder of the week, from Sunday to Wednesday, the desk will be manned by the highly experienced team of Tim McMillan and Angela Tsun, who have built a strong rapport with Western Australian audiences through their weekend presentations.
Reflecting on the decision, Susannah Carr described it as both a sad and happy occasion. "I realised that it's time to do it," Carr stated, acknowledging she couldn't give up the job "cold turkey." She confirmed her lifelong passion for news, saying, "I know I'm speaking for Rick as well when I say we both love our jobs and I'm an absolute news junkie." Carr plans to use her newfound spare time to study Italian and French, as well as pursue writing.
Rick Ardon echoed the sentiment, affirming his continued hunger for journalism. "Viewers should know I'm still as hungry as ever as a presenter and also a journalist, always on the lookout for breaking news," Ardon said, expecting to be a "news breaker well into the future."
Seamless Transition with Proven Talent
Seven West Media's leadership has expressed full confidence in the seamless transition, citing the depth of talent within the 7News Perth team. Ray Kuka, Seven's Director of News and Current Affairs, praised the arrangement. "Sue and Rick thankfully remain a central part of our on-air identity, and this adjusted schedule gives them more flexibility after 40 years while still keeping their experience and trust available to viewers," Kuka said.
He highlighted the calibre of McMillan and Tsun, noting the bulletin would continue to thrive. Tim McMillan brings over two decades of high-profile reporting, including award-winning work on Flashpoint and contributions to legislative change like 'Pep's Law'. Angela Tsun has evolved over a decade at Seven from a beloved weather presenter into a respected anchor known for her warmth and sharp news instincts.
McMillan spoke of the profound honour of stepping into the role, recalling childhood memories of watching Carr and Ardon. "All these years later to be taking over from them is an incredible honour. They are very big shoes for us to fill but I feel like we're ready for it," he said.
Angela Tsun added, "I've watched and respected the tenacity and inquisitive minds of Sue and Rick for so long. Watching them has helped me develop to a point where we're ready for the future."
Supporting Team and Continued Excellence
The core news team will remain robustly supported. Ryan Daniels continues on sports, Samantha Jolly on weather, with Adrian Barich and Charlotte Goodlet remaining part of the weekend lineup. Tim McMillan will also continue his role on Money Talks and both he and Tsun will keep filing stories for 7News.
Maryna Fewster, Chief Executive of Seven West Media WA, said the changes ensure the team can "continue our proud history of delivering WA's best news bulletin." Christien de Garis, 7News Perth News Director, assured viewers that "while the faces on particular nights might be changing, the journalism will remain as strong as ever."
The new on-air schedule commences on Sunday, 18 January 2026, heralding a carefully managed new chapter for Perth's most-watched news service.
