Music in Paradise: A Soulful Fusion of Sound and Serenity in Fiji
Imagine unwinding with a sunset swim in Natadola Bay, Fiji, as the perfect prelude to a three-day musical extravaganza. This is the essence of Music in Paradise (MiP), a unique event that marries live performances with tropical resort living, creating an unforgettable experience for attendees.
Acclimatizing to Island Rhythms
In a group briefing, Marie Gray, co-founder of the Sydney-based MiP, explains the philosophy behind their international events. "Our gatherings span six or seven days, allowing people time to settle into new surroundings, adjust to the heat and humidity, and enjoy activities like swimming, snorkeling, surfing, golfing, and relaxation," she shares. This approach ensures guests are at their best when the music begins.
By the time Monday evening arrives, after days of beachside leisure, the anticipation peaks. As the Teskey Brothers take the stage, Josh Teskey's voice resonates like a force of nature, echoing through the fiery Fiji sunset and captivating the sold-out crowd of 250.
The Teskey Brothers' Electrifying Performances
With a soulful sound that channels legends like Otis Redding, the band delivers a powerful setlist. They perform every track from their 2017 album Half Mile Harvest, alongside a Ray Charles classic and a stunning rendition of INXS's Never Tear Us Apart. Josh Teskey announces a unique challenge: "We'll perform each of our last three studio albums in full over three gigs in four days," sparking cheers from the audience.
The venue, the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, is a haven for surfers, snorkelers, golfers, and those lounging by the pool with pina coladas. Electric buggies and shuttle buses facilitate easy movement, while three on-site restaurants, including Sanasana, offer diverse dining options. Themed dinners like "Fijian Flair" and "Asian Odyssey" highlight local flavors, with curries reflecting Fiji's rich Indian heritage.
Community Engagement and Environmental Stewardship
MiP's commitment extends beyond music, supporting community projects wherever they go. A visit to Malomalo public school showcases this ethos, with Sam Teskey joining a kids' soccer game and attendees touring refurbished facilities. "It's great to see the impact of our support, from new bathrooms to school supplies," Marie notes, emphasizing how small businesses can make a big difference in developing communities.
Despite tropical storms, the show goes on, with the band performing Run Home Slow in full under a clearing sky. An a capella rendition of Hold Me brings the band into the audience, creating an intimate moment. Co-founder Jamie Gray highlights MiP's resilience, "It's my hope that everyone sees at least one perfect sunset show. If we get two or three, that's a bonus."
His daughter Kali, studying marine biology, adds, "I hope to specialize in sharks and ensure their survival," reflecting the Gray family's dedication to ocean health and community flourishing.
A Grand Finale and Lasting Memories
The event concludes with What Will Be from The Winding Way album, a gospel-inspired number that lights up the stage with Josh Teskey's vocals and Sam Teskey's guitar. The entire band and audience sway together, creating a transcendent atmosphere. As one last sunrise swim reveals Natadola Bay's beauty, it's clear: this is truly music in paradise.
MiP continues to blend soulful sounds with island serenity, proving that music and community can thrive in harmony.
