Acclaimed Australian country music artist Lyn Bowtell has received one of the industry's highest honours, with her induction into Tamworth's prestigious Galaxy of Stars. The ten-time Golden Guitar winner was celebrated during a special ceremony at the Toyota FanZone on Wednesday morning, marking a significant milestone in her distinguished career.
A Career of Contribution and Mentorship
Bowtell's induction recognises her profound impact on the country music scene, not only through her own acclaimed recordings and performances but also through her dedicated mentorship of emerging artists. She serves as the director of the CMAA Academy of Country Music and founded the SHE Songwriting Retreats, initiatives that have nurtured countless talents across the nation.
"I think mentoring others makes what I do in music so much deeper," Bowtell reflected. "It gives me that sense of fulfilment that I wouldn't have otherwise. I think that's truly when you live an existence that is fulfilled, when you give back, when you help other people grow and learn from your mistakes."
Personal Connections to Tamworth
The honour holds deep personal significance for Bowtell, who first experienced the Tamworth Country Music Festival as a teenager. She fondly recalled her early visits, staying at the Paradise Caravan Park, learning to boot scoot, and playing guitar by the river.
"To be back here now, I still feel like that kid when I arrive at the festival," she shared. "It is an absolute honour to be part of the Academy, and an honour to be part of this festival. To be included in the Galaxy of Stars is huge for me."
Industry Recognition and Praise
Last year's inductee, Luke O'Shea, joined Bowtell on stage during her performance before surprising her with the presentation. He described her as "a true star and worthy of this award," noting her continuous artistic evolution.
Tamworth Regional Council country music co-ordinator Cheryl Brown emphasised the difficulty in capturing the full scope of Bowtell's contributions. "She is an extraordinary singer, songwriter, performer and mentor," Brown stated. "From country music clubs on the Darling Downs to major stages across Australia and the world, Lyn Bowtell has earned her place as one of this country's most respected artists."
Artistic Evolution and Future Directions
Despite her extensive achievements, Bowtell feels she is still growing as an artist. "I just feel like I'm starting to get good and I feel like I'm just starting to understand who I am as an artist," she revealed. "I don't get nervous anymore: I just have fun."
Her brass plaque has been permanently installed in the forecourt of the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre, joining previous inductees including Beccy Cole, Catherine Britt, Sara Storer, Travis Collins, Kasey Chambers, Slim Dusty, Lee Kernaghan and John Williamson.
The 2026 Tamworth Country Music Festival continues through January 25, celebrating the vibrant community that Bowtell has helped shape through her music and mentorship.
