Boy George Opens Up About Using AI for Songwriting Success
In a surprising revelation, Boy George, the iconic 80s music star, has shared the secret behind his recent songwriting achievements: artificial intelligence. The Culture Club frontman, whose real name is George Alan O'Dowd, admitted to using AI to write lyrics for multiple albums, showcasing a bold embrace of technology in the creative process.
AI as a Collaborative Tool in Music Creation
During a recent episode of Fearne Cotton's podcast Happy Place, Boy George detailed his extensive use of AI, stating, "I've written like five albums with AI, I've actually had a couple of things covered by artists as well." Cotton initially expressed surprise but acknowledged that while AI often sparks fear, it can offer significant benefits when applied appropriately. Boy George, who served as a coach on The Voice for four seasons, revealed he is leveraging AI to compose songs while touring North America with Culture Club.
He emphasized that AI allows him to work more independently, enjoying the ability to refine outputs through dialogue. "I have fantastic conversations with ChatGPT and I'll say, 'Oh those lyrics are crap, that's not what I would say'," he explained. "But actually, you can train it." Boy George also dismissed concerns about AI's impersonal nature, noting his manager's comment about interacting with someone in China, to which he responded, "I couldn't care less." He positioned himself as ahead of traditional industry norms, stating, "An artist like me, they try to force you to work in an old-fashioned way. I'm ahead of them."
AI's Growing Role in the Music Industry
Boy George is not alone in integrating AI into music production. In June 2025, rapper and producer Timbaland announced the signing of an AI-generated music artist, TaTa Taktumi, to his new label, Stage Zero. The label aims to blend AI-generated sounds with human creativity to pioneer a genre called A-Pop, or AI pop. Timbaland created TaTa Taktumi from scratch using various multimedia tools, including the AI-powered music generation software Suno.
The company released Tata's first single, Glitch x Pulse, in October last year, featuring an AI-generated voice and digital presence in the accompanying music video. This trend highlights a broader shift in the music industry, where artists are increasingly exploring AI to enhance creativity and efficiency.
As AI technology continues to evolve, its impact on songwriting and music production is becoming more pronounced, with pioneers like Boy George leading the way in adopting these innovative tools.
