NSW Achieves Milestone with Largest Ever Australia Day Ambassador Program
The Australia Day Council of New South Wales has unveiled an unprecedented initiative for the 2026 celebrations, marking a significant expansion of its long-standing ambassador program. With a record-breaking 111 ambassadors appointed, this year's effort represents the most extensive outreach in the program's over three-decade history. These inspirational figures are set to engage with communities across the vast majority of local government areas in NSW, fostering connections and sharing diverse Australian stories.
Strengthening Community Ties Through Personal Engagement
NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism, Steve Kamper, emphasised the profound impact of this expanded program. "The Australia Day ambassador program and the sheer volume of local events planned across the state are a reminder of how strong our sense of community in NSW truly is," he stated. The ambassadors, selected for their exemplary contributions and leadership, hail from a wide array of backgrounds, each having demonstrated excellence in their respective fields. Their voluntary participation underscores a shared commitment to celebrating Australian identity and values.
Ambassador activities will vary widely, reflecting the unique character of each local community. Itineraries may include:
- Reading sessions with children in public libraries
- Participation in citizenship ceremonies
- Judging roles in local competitions, such as lamington bake-offs
- Involvement in traditional sporting events like the City versus Country cricket match
Diverse Voices Enrich the National Conversation
This year's cohort features both seasoned veterans and exciting newcomers, offering a rich tapestry of experiences. Television personality, cook, and writer Fuzz Ali joins the program for the first time, bringing a unique perspective shaped by his multicultural upbringing. "I had the privilege of being born in Australia, growing up in Fiji, and returning to Australia as an adult," Ali remarked. "I've experienced the generosity of this country here at home, and out in the wider world. This is something worth celebrating."
In contrast, general practitioner and television host Dr Cindy Pan brings over 15 years of experience as an ambassador. She values the program for its personal significance, noting, "It's taken me to places I might otherwise not have visited and it's a valuable opportunity to reflect and consider what it means to be an Australian." Her continued involvement highlights the enduring appeal and impact of the ambassador role.
Widespread Events Foster Statewide Participation
Complementing the ambassador visits, more than 150 local events have been registered across NSW for Australia Day 2026. These gatherings provide opportunities for residents to engage with the ambassadors and celebrate together, reinforcing community bonds. The combined efforts of ambassadors and event organisers aim to create a inclusive and reflective atmosphere for all Australians.
This record-setting initiative not only honours the achievements of individual ambassadors but also strengthens the fabric of NSW society by promoting unity, diversity, and shared national pride.
