A Queensland operations manager has walked free from a Newcastle court despite admitting to a vicious assault that left another man with serious facial injuries outside a popular Darby Street establishment.
Jordan Luke Williams, 28, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm for the incident that occurred in the early hours of November 26, 2022. The court heard how Williams struck the victim with such force that it caused significant damage to the man's face.
Magistrate Janine Lacey acknowledged the serious nature of the attack but ultimately decided against imposing a prison sentence. Instead, Williams received an 18-month intensive corrections order to be served in the community.
The magistrate noted several mitigating factors in her decision, including Williams' early guilty plea, his genuine remorse, and his previously clean criminal record. She also considered his stable employment as an operations manager and his positive prospects for rehabilitation.
According to police facts presented to the court:
- The assault occurred around 1:30 am outside the Darby Street venue
- Williams approached the victim and delivered a single punch to his face
- The impact caused immediate and visible injury to the victim
- Williams remained at the scene until police arrived
Despite avoiding jail time, Williams will face strict conditions under his corrections order, including regular reporting and requirements to remain on good behavior. The case highlights the judicial system's consideration of rehabilitation prospects alongside the need for accountability in violent offenses.
