The clang of steel echoed across Reddall Reserve on Australia Day, as holiday crowds witnessed an unexpected spectacle amidst the usual flags and barbecues. Shining knights in full armour engaged in fierce combat, organised by the Illawarra Manticore, a local medieval armoured fighting team showcasing the sport of historical battle re-enactment.
Authentic Medieval Combat on Display
Illawarra Manticore captain Steve King-Gee emphasised that these were not staged performances. "There are no fake hits," he stated, explaining the rigorous nature of the sport. The team participates in various formats, from small-scale duels to massive team events known as buhurts, which can involve up to 150 combatants per side.
"We are all members of the Australian Medieval Combat Federation, so for us, it's an actual real sport, not just something put on for show," Mr King-Gee added, highlighting the competitive and athletic aspects of medieval combat.
Intensive Training and Heavy Gear
Participating in this demanding sport requires significant dedication and physical conditioning. The Illawarra Manticore team trains multiple times each week, gradually progressing from soft armour to the formidable steel suits that weigh over 50 kilograms.
"We start training in soft armour to condition ourselves before even considering the steel armour," Mr King-Gee explained. "It's not something you can jump straight into because the gear weighs so much." This preparation ensures safety and performance during the intense battles.
Engaging the Australia Day Crowds
The Australia Day event at Reddall Reserve served as a public demonstration aimed at generating interest and potential new recruits for the sport. According to Mr King-Gee, the response from spectators was overwhelmingly positive.
"I think the crowd loved it," he said. "There was a lot of cheering, and we did have some people approach us to ask how they could get involved." The combination of historical spectacle and athletic prowess clearly captivated those celebrating the national holiday.
