Canberra's 2026 NYE Fireworks: $462k Contract, Lake Rooms Booked Out
Canberra's 2026 NYE fireworks: $462k contract, lake rooms booked

Canberra is gearing up to welcome 2026 with a spectacular bang, as fireworks make a triumphant return to Lake Burley Griffin and surrounding hotels report a complete sell-out of rooms with prime viewing spots.

A Three-Year Fireworks Contract Sees Cost Increase

The ACT government has secured the future of the capital's New Year's Eve celebrations, signing a new contract with Fireworks Australia. The deal, valued at $462,000, will cover the displays for 2025, 2026, and 2027. This breaks down to an annual cost of approximately $154,000, marking an 11 per cent increase from the $138,000 spent on the 2024 event.

Marty Brady from Fireworks Australia confirmed his team is preparing for Canberra's largest-ever pyrotechnic show, despite adjustments needed due to construction on Commonwealth Avenue bridge. "[There are] two more barges than last year ... and they are chockers," Mr Brady said.

Prime Viewing Locations and Hotel Boom

The skies above the lake will ignite with two major displays, at 9pm and midnight on December 31, 2025. The fireworks will be synchronised to a soundtrack broadcast live on local radio station Mix 106.3.

Revellers are encouraged to gather at four official locations:

  • Rond Terrace
  • Wendouree Drive near the Carillon
  • John Dunmore Lang Place in front of Questacon
  • Ferry Gate at Regatta Point

Each site will feature local DJs and food trucks. Notably, Barrine Drive on Regatta Point will be closed this year due to the bridge works.

The event is driving a significant tourism boost. Hotels with coveted lake views, including Ovolo and BreakFree Capital Tower in New Acton, have completely booked out their balcony rooms for the night. Further around the lake in Campbell, The Sebel hotel reported a recent surge in bookings, largely from interstate travellers from Sydney and Melbourne.

Transport, Safety and Weather Forecast

To help manage the expected crowd of over 50,000 people—matching the 2023 attendance—the ACT government will offer free bus and light rail services all day on December 31. Passengers must still tap on and off to register a zero-dollar fare.

Key roads including Parkes Way, Wendouree Drive, and Commonwealth Avenue will be closed for several hours during the evening. Drivers are advised to plan their routes and parking in advance.

ACT Policing will maintain a visible presence around the lake, with patrols similar to last year's levels. Meanwhile, the weather forecast for New Year's Eve remains uncertain, predicted to be a "mixed bag" with potential for high temperatures, wind, and rain.

With barges loaded, hotels full, and the city preparing for a massive influx of spectators, Canberra is set to ring in 2026 with its most ambitious and costly fireworks celebration to date.
