Cairns Council Reveals Australia Day 2024 Program

Cairns residents can now start planning their national day celebrations, with the Cairns Regional Council releasing the official and detailed program for Australia Day 2024. The day promises a blend of meaningful ceremonies, community recognition, and family-friendly entertainment, culminating in a dazzling fireworks display.

A Full Day of Community and Celebration

The formal proceedings will commence at 8:30 am on Friday, January 26, with the Citizenship and Awards Ceremony at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC). This significant event will welcome 70 new Australian citizens from 26 different nations, a powerful moment highlighting the region's multicultural fabric.

During the same ceremony, the council will honour outstanding local contributors. The prestigious Cairns Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and Senior Citizen of the Year awards will be announced, alongside the Community Group of the Year. These awards celebrate the individuals and organisations whose voluntary efforts and achievements have significantly enriched the Cairns community.

Family Fun and Evening Spectacular

Following the morning's formalities, the focus shifts to the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon for an afternoon and evening of free, accessible fun. From 3:00 pm onwards, the lagoon precinct will come alive with vibrant entertainment suitable for all ages.

The council has curated a lively lineup including roving performers, engaging workshops, and live music to create a festive atmosphere. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic, enjoy the iconic lagoon setting, and soak up the community spirit.

The grand finale of the day will light up the tropical sky. A spectacular fireworks show is scheduled to burst into colour over the Esplanade Lagoon at 7:30 pm, providing a perfect, picturesque end to the national day celebrations.

Council's Commitment to Inclusive Events

Cairns Regional Council Mayor, Amy Eden, emphasised the importance of the day as an opportunity for unity and reflection. She stated that the program is designed to offer something for everyone, from the solemnity of the citizenship ceremony to the joyous community festivities.

"Australia Day is a chance to reflect on our nation's history, celebrate our diverse community, and look to the future," Mayor Eden said. "We have a fantastic program that honours new citizens, recognises local heroes, and provides a free, fun event for families to come together."

The council's detailed announcement allows locals and visitors to fully prepare for the day. With events spanning from a formal civic occasion to a relaxed lagoon-side party and fireworks, the Cairns Australia Day 2024 program is poised to deliver a memorable experience for the entire Far North Queensland community.
