Richmond's Prestia, Ex-Melbourne's May Cleared of Sorrento Brawl Charges
Prestia, May Cleared of Sorrento Brawl Charges

Richmond veteran Dion Prestia and retired Melbourne premiership player Steven May have finally seen the end of their long-running court saga, as police dropped all charges related to an alleged brawl in Sorrento. The AFL players had consistently denied any wrongdoing following the incident in December 2024, which police initially claimed left two men hospitalised.

Charges Withdrawn and Costs Ordered

On Friday, charges against both players were formally withdrawn, with the prosecution ordered to cover their legal costs, as reported by Channel 7's Tom Morris. Prestia had been accused of recklessly causing serious injury, while May faced a charge of affray. The decision marks a significant victory for the duo, who have maintained their innocence throughout the process.

Prestia's Strong Denial

Prestia, a key figure in Richmond's midfield, had previously issued a statement through the club asserting his innocence. "I was not involved in the fight. I was not even physically present when it apparently took place," he said. "I deny that I am guilty of these offences and will strenuously defend these charges." The Tigers have stood by their player since the charges were laid.

May's Retirement and Club Support

Melbourne similarly backed May, but the defender has since parted ways with the club, retiring on the eve of the 2025 AFL season. The former Demon, who played a crucial role in Melbourne's 2021 premiership, has now closed this chapter of his life. Both Prestia and May began their AFL careers together at the Gold Coast Suns before moving to Victorian clubs.
