A man accused of a violent domestic assault at a home in Fletcher has been refused bail, with a court hearing details of the alleged attack involving kicking and choking.

Kenny Au, 38, appeared before Newcastle Local Court on Monday, where police alleged that on Saturday evening, he assaulted a woman known to him at a residence on Fletcher Drive. According to court documents, the incident began when the woman asked Au to leave the property, and he allegedly became aggressive.
Police claim Au kicked the woman multiple times in the legs and body, then choked her to the point where she struggled to breathe. The alleged victim sustained bruising and abrasions and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
Charges Laid
Au was charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, one count of choking without consent, and one count of common assault. The choking charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment under New South Wales law.
Police opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the risk of further offending. Magistrate Ian Cheetham refused bail, noting the domestic violence context and the need to protect the alleged victim.
Court Outcome
Au did not apply for bail and will remain in custody. The matter was adjourned to March 27 for a further mention. A provisional apprehended domestic violence order was also put in place to protect the woman.
