Reclusive Australian star Mia Wasikowska has made a rare red carpet appearance years after retiring from Hollywood at the height of her career. The 36-year-old actress attended the premiere of her new indie horror movie, Leviticus, which has been receiving rave reviews from critics.
Wasikowska walked the red carpet in good spirits, posing with co-stars for what marked her first official red carpet event in years. The actress previously stepped away from Hollywood to return to her home in Australia, citing a dislike for the lifestyle.
Why She Left Hollywood
In a past interview with IndieWire, Wasikowska explained her decision: "I didn't entirely like the lifestyle of going back-to-back-to-back. I felt really disconnected from any greater community." She added, "I want to do more things in life other than be in a trailer."
After starring in blockbusters like Disney's Alice in Wonderland and Crimson Peak, Wasikowska was once a Hollywood "it" girl. However, she found the constant travel and lack of stability challenging. "I spent 10 to 15 years, completely like, new city, new country, every three months. It's like starting school again every few months," she said.
Finding Balance
Wasikowska expressed contentment with her current life, saying, "If I can have the best of both worlds, which is dip in and out of it occasionally, I'd be really happy. But I wouldn't ever be in that place where I was just on a treadmill." She emphasized the importance of having a sense of belonging beyond film sets.
The actress remains one of Australia's biggest acting exports from the noughties, but she now prioritizes personal fulfillment over constant work. "I'm pretty content," she concluded.
